Bombazo Concert

  • Pomona College Edmunds Ballroom, Smith Campus Center 170 E. Sixth Street (map)

Please join us for a free concert by Redobles de Cultura!

The New York City Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba ensemble is coming to Pomona College as part of its first West Coast tour.

Redobles de Cultura will offer free Bomba dancing lessons! Bomba is a traditional music style from Puerto Rico, played with two or more drums. It exemplifies the mixture of African, Spanish and Taino cultures in the island. Bomba is also a dancing style. As a matter of fact, what characterizes Bomba is the connection between the drummer and the dancer. Instead of dancing to the drumming beat, it is the drummer who follows the dancer.

Redobles de Cultura is a collective of top New York City-based Puerto Rican Bomba practitioners. Throughout the years, they have toured internationally to Canada, Cuba, Mexico, Germany, Thailand, Singapore, Africa, the Dominican Republic and other countries. Working for more than 15 years with other groups and initiatives, the group officially came together as the RDCNYC trio in November 2016 to offer community engagement and presentations to audiences of all ages and backgrounds, this time through the eyes of first generation "DiaspoRicans," who can pair the foundational knowledge of their elders with the aesthetics, styles and realities of urban and diaspora perspectives.
