Creator's Biography:
Jurakán: Nation in Resistance is Gonzalo Mazzini and Rosa Emmanuelli Gutierrez’s first full-length documentary. These young filmmakers born in México and Puerto Rico, respectively, have studied and been transformed by their experiences outside of their home-countries.
Gonzalo Mazzini, the director, studied film and communications. Rosa Emmanuelli Gutiérrez, the creative producer, studied sociology. The creator's studied at the University of Tampa, where they met.
When Mazzini visited Puerto Rico for the first time in 2013, he observed that this country’s flag always waved behind the U.S. flag, flaunting Puerto Rico’s colonial status. This status raised serious questions in his mind. Having lived in Puerto Rico for most of her life, Rosa was aware of the colonialism yet there were many historical gaps on a reality that had long ago settled on complicity.
Together they ventured on a journey to answer the daunting question, what does it mean to be Puerto Rican? Jurakán is the riveting result of their search for answers.
Rosa and Gonzalo are now working on two documentaries, one of them being Jurakán's sequel, that will document how communities take action in the face of colonialism, and the other one about the Mexican borders.
